Alkanes Nomenclature and Numbering

The simplest organic compounds are hydrocarbons. Hydrocarbons contain only two elements, hydrogen and carbon. A saturated hydrocarbon or alkane is a hydrocarbon in which all of the carbon-carbon bonds are single bonds. Each carbon atom forms four bonds and each hydrogen forms a single bond to a carbon. The bonding around each carbon atom is tetrahedral, so all bond angles are 109.5 degrees. As a result, the carbon atoms in higher alkanes are arranged in zig-zag rather than linear patterns. Straight-Chain Alkanes The general formula for an alkane is CnH2n2 where n is the number of carbon atoms in the molecule. There are two ways of writing a condensed structural formula. For example, butane may be written as CH3CH2CH2CH3 or CH3(CH2)2CH3. Rules for Naming Alkanes The parent name of the molecule is determined by the number of carbons in the longest chain. In the case where two chains have the same number of carbons, the parent is the chain with the most substituents. The carbons in the chain are numbered starting from the end nearest the first substituent. In the case where there are substituents having the same number of carbons from both ends, numbering starts from the end nearest the next substituent. When more than one of a given substituent is present, a prefix is applied to indicate the number of substituents. Use di- for two, tri- for three, tetra- for four, etc. and use the number assigned to the carbon to indicate the position of each substituent. Branched Alkanes Branched substituents are numbered starting from the carbon of the substituent attached to the parent chain. From this carbon, count the number of carbons in the longest chain of the substituent. The substituent is named as an alkyl group based on the number of carbons in this chain. The numbering of the substituent chain starts from the carbon attached to the parent chain. The entire name of the branched substituent is placed in parentheses, preceded by a number indicating which parent-chain carbon it joins.Substituents are listed in alphabetical order. To alphabetize, ignore numerical (di-, tri-, tetra-) prefixes (e.g., ethyl would come before dimethyl), but dont ignore dont ignore positional prefixes such as iso and tert (e.g., triethyl comes before tertbutyl). Cyclic Alkanes The parent name is determined by the number of carbons in the largest ring (e.g., a cycloalkane such as cyclohexane). In the case where the ring is attached to a chain containing additional carbons, the ring is considered to be a substituent on the chain. A substituted ring that is a substituent on something else is named using the rules for branched alkanes. When two rings are attached to each other, the larger ring is the parent and the smaller is a cycloalkyl substituent. The carbons of the ring are numbered such that the substituents are given the lowest possible numbers. Reflection Of God Is God - 1271 Words

Chapter One: GOD God is God, no matter how simple that statement is, it is true and always will be. No one can know God perfectly, He is infinite and no one can wrap their minds around just exactly who God is. Most of us know about God, but that is quite different from actually knowing God. Our God is bigger and greater than anything anyone could ever think of. Yet the Bible tells us many things about God and the way He works that could help us better understand Him. Our God is three in one, God being three in one is what we call the â€Å"Trinity†. Trinity is the Christian doctrine that deals with and also describes the nature of God. In the Trinity, the three persons are God the father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. If God is not†¦show more content†¦The Trinity is one of the most difficult concepts to comprehend but it seems to be easier if you recognize the distinction between a â€Å"being† and a â€Å"person.† God is only one being, the o ne and only divine being. This divine being exists as three persons, which is the Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit. This is the part where our brains gets confused because each human being is only one person, and it might seem that every being has to be one person. But that is simply just not always the case. For example a pet is a being but not a person. A plant is a being and not a person. In these cases, one being = zero persons. On the other hand an angel is a being and is a person, just like us humans, one being = one person. Once you realize that not every being is exactly one person it might be easier to grasp the concept of the Trinity. The Trinity is still a complex mystery, but we do not need to fully understand it to benefit from it. Because of Jesus’ death and resurrection, the Holy Spirit has entered into our hearts and souls, allowing us to be reconciled to God the father. If you think about almost every other religion in the world they all seem to know almost everything about their â€Å"god† and what it does and what it stands for. That is why Christians get hit so hard with the question, â€Å"Why do you believe in something you do not completely know is real?†. Tackles and Tears free essay sample

I grabbed my gym bag, and trudged out of the locker room, with my head hanging low. My team had just lost its third consecutive football game. Needless to say, I wasnt in the best mood. I passed my coach on the way out, and we made eye contact, which I quickly broke. I didnt want to talk, so I just walked by him. He didnt seem to mind. I stepped outside and the heat hit me like a smack in the face. It was way too hot for October, 90 degrees. I saw my dads yellow pickup in the student parking lot, and I walked towards it, dragging my feet a little. Sweat ran into my eyes. I didnt even try to wipe it off, I just squinted a little and kept walking. When I got to my dads truck, I threw my gym bag in the bed, and climbed in the passenger side. I just shook my head, and directed the air conditioning vent towards my face. Dad pulled out of the parking lot, and made a right. You hungry? he asked. I shook my head no, but he took the growl from my stomach as a yes. He made a right onto Pigeon Hill Road, and we passed the airport. I take it the game didnt go so well? Again, I just shook my head. He stopped trying to make conversation. A couple minutes later we pulled into the parking lot of Foodbarn, a local deli. Dad handed me a ten, and said that he was going to wait in the truck. It was hot and muggy inside the store, and the man behind the counter was fanning himself with a notepad. Can I help you? Yeah, I said, wiping the sweat off of my face, Can I get a foot long turkey sub? Sure thing, he said, as he reached under the counter and grabbed the turkey. While he was preparing my sandwich, a lady walked in with two kids, a boy and a girl. She was a big lady, and had on a purple, moth eaten Winnie the Pooh shirt. It looked like shed ripped it once, and tried stitching it back up herself. Her hair was a wreck on the top of her head, and she had on more eye makeup than was necessary. Her son looked about six years old, and had on a Pokemon t-shirt. Her daughter was even younger, and was wearing an old, yellow dress that was too big for her. She walked by me, towards the checkout counter, with her kids hands firmly in her own. I could smell the sweat on her. My sandwich was ready, and when I took it to the register I heard the lady ask for a carton of cigarettes. I stood behind her. The boy looked back at me, and I smiled at him. He gave a tiny grin, but then quickly looked at the ground, and gripped his moms hand a little tighter. The lady was talking to the cashier, about the heat, and the little girl asked her mother in a hushed voice if she could get an ice cream bar out of the freezer. Her mother ignored her. So the little girl asked again, and this time, her mothe r reached down and smacked the little girls mouth, hard, and said in an angry voice, Cant you see that Im talking! She then turned back towards the cashier, and acted like nothing had happened. The cashier looked surprised, but she didnt say anything. The little girl cried and held her mouth with her free hand. She made high pitched wheezing noises every time she took a breath. Again, her mother stopped talking to the cashier, grabbed the girls arm and shook her hard. Shut Up! she yelled. I was taken aback. I couldnt believe that the mother had reacted so violently towards this little girl. The mother saw me watching, and glared darkly at me. She then paid the cashier, who had a shocked expression on her face, and left the store, half dragging her children behind her. I was in disbelief as I watched her leave the store. I placed my sandwich on the counter, and the cashier rang it up. We didnt say anything to each other. There was nothing to say. She handed me my change, I left the s tore, and got in my dads pickup. As we pulled out of the parking lot, I saw the lady and her children walking along the road. The lady already had one of her cigarettes in her mouth, and the little girl still had tears streaming down her face. Hey, Dad? Yeah, Brandon? Thanks.

Why Do Projects Fail

A Computer-assisted dispatch system (LASCAD) was implemented by the London Ambulance Service in October 1992 (Beynon-davies 1995, p.171). This was a major software project that was supposed to substitute the manual system (Fitzgerald Russo 2005, p.248).Advertising We will write a custom report sample on Why Do Projects Fail? specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More The LASCAD system started experiencing problems only nine days after it was launched. Erroneous vehicle information was recorded by the system due to the wrong key that was pressed by a crew member (McGrath 2002, p.254). Hence, vehicles were incorrectly allocated leading to long delays. The LASCAD system soon came into a standstill because of the large and spiraling calls made by patients in order to receive help. Several calls were captured by the system within a very short time. The delay caused a massive death of patients. Eventually, the chief executive officer of LASCAD w as compelled to resign. A new LASCAD system was put in place after four years. From the case study, it is evident that the initial management of the VCF, LASCAD and the baggage-handling project were not realistic at all. In addition, the software project failed due to lack of prior testing of LASCAD’s emergency backup system. Worse still, the LASCAD’s operators lacked adequate training before the system went live (Chua 2009, p.33). In yet another project failure, a large IT software platform known as MANDATA was set up by the Australian Public Service Board in 1970 (Chua 2009, p.33). The IT project was supposed to automate personnel administration. However, the software project failed and did not meet the set objectives. The brainchild of the project retired shortly after the feasibility of the study was accomplished (Hamill Goseva-Popstojanova 2009, p.488). One of the reasons for failure was the funding restriction. Lack of adequate funding to install all the pertine nt software and maintenance of the facility was a core challenge. There was also limited support from the MANDATA users. In addition, lack of full engagement among the Rural Inclusion Support Program (RISP) workers was also noted as a major source of failure (Hamill Goseva-Popstojanova 2009, p.487). Lack of frequent interaction among the stakeholders of CONFIRM. The complexity of the project in the course of its operation hampered the smooth monitoring of all the pertinent activities. For example, the strategies used to implement changes at MANDATA were quite ineffective and complicated. These were some of the failure reasons for the large software project that was supposed to ease down operations at both the locak and national level.Advertising Looking for report on business economics? Cinderella Essays

Cinderella Essays Cinderella Paper Cinderella Paper hi.. im just looking around Tattercoats Tattacoats is an English fairy tale gathered by Joseph Jacobs in his â€Å"More English Fairy Tales†. A fairy tale is a fictional story that may feature magical characters and numbers. They always ends happily, but they also contains a moral or message. So what’s the moral in Tattercoats? The tale is a about a girl named Tattercoats, who lived in a castle on an island in the middle of the sea. Her mother died in childbirth, therefore did Tattercoats grandfather swear that he would never look at her. So she grew up quite mistreated, and was called Tattercoats for her tattered clothing. One day an invitation from the king arrived, announcing a great ball at which the prince will chose a bride. Her grandfather sailed off to the palace, but Tattercoats was left behind. So she went to see her only friends, the geese, and there she meet a boy, who became her friend. The boy could fly a kite, so he used it to fly Tattercoats across the sea. They meet a handsome young man on their journey. He asked for direction, but they were already heading to the castle so he followed them. Suddenly he looked at Tattercoats. The young man had a revelation, and felt in love with the poor, tattered and dirty girl who never had experienced such a thing as love. The man was so impressed by her beauty, that he invited her to the ball. When she arrived to the, she discovered that the young man was the prince, and he chose her to be his bride. They lived happily ever after, meanwhile Tattercoats grandfather went back to his castle more bitterly than ever. Tattercoats† is based on a traditional English tale, that shares some features with the Cinderella story. First of all there is a poor and abandoned girl whose parents are dead, and therefore her only relative is a mean stepmother or, as in this case a vicious grandfather who don’t see her as a family member. The life of the girl is awful, but she has to live accordingly until one day she hears that the prince is looking for a bride. Sure there is no chance she is able to make it to the upcoming ball. Then something magical happens, a miracle. In â€Å"Cinderella† it is a fairy who conjures a pumpkin coach up whereas in â€Å"Tattercoats† it is a boy with a wonderful pipe and some geese, that makes it is possible for Tattercoats to attend the ball. SenderObjectReceiver The nurseThe PrinceTattercoats HelperSubjectOpponent The herd boyTattercoatsThe grandfather The nurse is the sender, because she is the one who encourages Tattercoats to go to the ball to â€Å"seek her fortune† which is the Prince. The nurse also asks the grandfather several times whether Tattercoats can be allowed to be guest at the ball, but she gets a rejection each time. Therefore Tattercoats goes to see her friends, the geese, and there she meets the boy who joyfully agrees to go with her to the castle. That makes him to the helper. The message in this story is, that its not how you dress or how much money you have that decides, what person you are, or what your future is going to look like. You just have to follow your dreams and believe in them. The message is also that the good persons always wins and they live happily ever after.

Law HW week 4 AM Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words

Law HW week 4 AM - Essay Example It is important that every society is economically stable as this will facilitate the circulation of revenue and other economic advances. Acquiring the property and utilizing it in a manner that promises economic benefits for those who dwell in and around it is, as a result, constitutional. It does not violate the takings clause found in the fifth amendment of the constitution. Revitalizing the economy of the distressed city will serve to benefit the greater public in aspects such as the provision of jobs and taxes for the city government as well as improving the general welfare of the people. The Fifth Amendment law recognizes the acquisition and utilization of property if it promises to benefit the public in such a manner. The law also recognizes the importance that the property bears to their owners and, for this reason, asserts that the urban authority should give them a just compensation. The assurance that seizure of the property by the City of New England will result in many benefits for the public renders the urban authority’s invocation of the power of eminent domain

Causes of deviant behavior Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words

Causes of deviant behavior - Essay Example For example, if a person enters their church scantly clad, they are being deviant because they are going against the norm. Their attire might be right to them, and it might be right for hanging out with friends, but it is not right in the eyes of those in the church. The people in a person’s life can offer the same influence. Peer pressure can cause a person to become deviant as they try to fit in with a certain group of people. They may also take on the beliefs and characteristics of friends or family members simply by being subjected to them for so long. A street gang is an example of how people can influence someone else to act out deviantly; in this case, the individual would conform against social norms out of fear of being punished by the other gang members. Despite the cause of deviant behavior, it is believed that people become deviant because they â€Å"have goals and needs that are not being met by society (Adler, 2008).† Therefore, when they are influenced by environments or people that go against social norms, they adapt the behavior for themselves since abiding by social norms was not doing them any good.

Belonging Essay Example for Free

Belonging Essay These essential components of belonging are portrayed through the poems of Peter Skrzynecki and another additional text the film Invictus directed by Clint Eastwood about the uniting of South Africa through the efforts of Nelson Mandella. Feeling a sense of connectedness Wether this be on a physical, social, spiritual or emotional level to something or someone allows for an individual to feel a sense of gratitude and self belief. To a certain extent the groups we belong to define who we are, and an individuals perceptions are the resulting outcome of belonging. The acceptance and kinship being in association with groups may bring one would say belonging would impact ones life positively. Although he opposing side of belonging is not belonging and is as a problem many people in the world face today. This alienation may leave individuals feeling detached and isolated from all things surrounding them. There are many reasons why one may not belong these may include race, religion, culture, attitudes and beliefs as well as many others. This separation felt may severely impact an individuals life in a negative direction. The poems by Australian poet Peter Skrzynecki illustrate many examples of kinship and detachment. Many of the poems in the book Immigrant Chronicle by Skrzyecki explain his problems with feeling like an outsider stuck in limbo between his Polish culture passed down by his parents and his new Australian culture that he was exposed to everyday. In the poem â€Å"Felix Skrzynecki† Skrzynecki states â€Å"I forgot my first Polish word† this line illustrates Skrzyneckis lack of interest in his Polish Culture as he feels he doesnt belong. In the poem â€Å"Felix Skrzynecki† Skrzynecki uses alliteration in the second stanza to suggest peace and tranquillity, as his father holds his garden in high regard and Skrzynecki feels this is the only place where is father truly belongs. This allows for responders to learn that one may feel attached to something other than other people or groups. In this poem Skrzynecki also illustrates his fathers exclusion from the rest of Australia by the line â€Å"did your father ever attempt to learn English† this line shows Felix isolation as he cannot speak the language of the country he lives in. Although in stanza one the lines â€Å"Kept pace only with the Joneses Of his own minds making† suggest that Felix was not bothered by values or lifestyle choices that he did not believe in. This poem and other Skrzynecki poems further knowledge involving belonging and not belonging as they provide primary sources that identify multiple examples of the issue. Destruction, analyses and in depth essays of the poems allowed for a deeper understanding of belonging to be gained. The Film Invictus by Clint Eastwood. The story is based on the novel Playing the Enemy: Nelson Mandella and the game that Made a Nation. The film tells the story of Nelson Mandella in his first term as South African President, and the initiation of the venture to abolish the apartheid and unite the nation through the 1995 Rugby World Cup. The film illustrates many examples of not belonging due racism and prejudice behaviours shown by white south Africa. The film allows for racism to be viewed as one of the demanding reasons for isolation. Although later in the film an attitude shift is imminent and relationships are bridged between â€Å"black and white South Africans due to the efforts of Mandella. The film illustrates how film techniques such as camera shots, angles and music are used to create a sense of detachment at the start of the film but also show the uniting of South Africa in the end of the film. Invictus enhances knowledge of the issue belonging as it shows many examples not belonging at the start of the film, but with a shift in attitudes reveals many signs of belonging shown towards the end of the film. Due to the complex and abstract nature of the concept of belonging, a true sense of belonging can be found in different circumstances for different people. A sense of belonging or not belonging is thought about by every person in the world today, its what many people strive for everyday although some may never find it,whilst others have always had it. Analysis of a range of texts including the Peter Skrzynecki poems and the film Invictus delve deeply into the many different circumstances that individuals may wish to belong in. Ultimately to belong will always be something people feel they need to fulfil their needs, although a sense of belonging will vary to different people. | |

Personal Narrative - Lasting Love Essay -- Personal Narrative Essays

Personal Narrative - Lasting Love I had never made biscuits and gravy before. The blessings of having a good cook as a Mom were abundant, but alas, I never did learn the many techniques that wonder woman possessed. My repertoire included: peanut butter cookies, a deliciously heated can of Pork n Beans, and Rice Krispie treats that were always too crunchy. But, Joseph wanted biscuits and gravy, so that is what Joseph got. His sister told me the recipe over the phone. Joseph had called her up long distance and gruffly demanded that she rattle off the legendary gravy recipe that their mother used to serve. She did so, and I obediently jotted down every word. The directions seemed simple enough, and I felt confidant that Joseph would enjoy my gravy. So thoroughly, in fact, that he would be instantly taken back to the carefree days of his youth. I enthusiastically announced that he better prepare his stomach for a scrumptious, hot off the grill meal the following day. He laughed, and said that I couldn't even make a bowl of cereal right. I laughed too, remembering back to the time when I spaced out and poured orange juice over his shredded wheat. At the crack of dawn the next morning, I crawled out of bed, brushed my teeth, and drowsily drove to 101 Bayfield Court in my plaid boxers and Watsa Matta U? sweatshirt. The antique yet picturesque fifties neighborhood home welcomed my tired body once again. My second home I called it. The door was always open, and the air always chilly inside. The first thing I saw, like every morning, was a long clear air tube sprawled out on the white linoleum tiles, leading to where the kitchen table was around the corner. My heart filled with complete joy when I heard the tubes crisp crack as i... ...ca to return to him at once. I almost said something, but I couldn't. Grabbing the purse at my feet, I stood up, and walked out of the room. I still think of Rebecca and Joseph daily. I wonder how Joseph's heath is going, and I wonder if maybe he isn't even here anymore. I think about Rebecca, and hope Nancy knows that a cup of cranberry juice can always lure her back home. I remember the time Rebecca, in a moment of clarity, told me about how she met Joseph. It was on his weekend leave during WWII, and at a night bar in San Diego. I imagine a swinging forties band playing in the background, and Rebecca, young and beautiful, casually sipping a drink at a table. I can see Joseph, handsome in his navy uniform, approach Rebecca. I see them meet, dance, and fall in love all in one night. Vibrant with youthfulness, strong in stature, and a glow in both of their eyes.

The Life World of Alfred Schutz

The world of everyday life is known as the life-world in Schutz's sociology. People are oriented to the life-world in the natural attitude, in which the world is taken for granted until a problematic situation emerges. Schutz maintained that the life-world is defined by six characteristics. First, it is characterized by wide-awakeness in which the actor gives full attention to life and its requirements. Second, the world is taken for granted; actors suspend any doubt of the existence of the life-world. Third, people work in the life-world — they â€Å"gear into† the life-world.Fourth, people experience the working self as the total self in the life-world. Fifth, the social life of the life-world is characterized by intersubjectivity. Sixth, the actor's flow of time intersects with the flow of time of society. The life world is an intersubjective world, one that existed before our birth; it was created by our predecessors and it was given to us to experience and interpre t. One's life-world, in other words, predates an individual's birth and is given to them to struggle with and attempt to transform. The life-world is therefore constraining, and people are always trying to shape or dominate it Cultural world was created by people in the past as in the present because it originates in and has been instituted by human actions; all cultural objects such as tools, symbols, languages, art, and social institutions point back to the origin and meaning of human action In his analysis of the life world Schutz was mainly concerned with the shared social stock of knowledge that leads to more or less habitual action Schutz views knowledge as the most variable element in our stock of knowledge because in a problematic situation we are able to come up with innovative ways of handling the situation Two aspects of stock of knowledge that is less likely to become problematic: 1. Knowledge of skills- most basic knowledge that rarely becomes problematic 2. Useful knowl edge- definite solution to a situation that was once problematic

Law Abiding Citizen Analysis Essay

The film has no opening title sequence. The first images we see are two production logos which then lead to the first scene. The zoom lens introduces us to what the main character was doing. Establishing shot shows the innocence in the main characters life as the colour white (the bead) represents purity. Soundtrack- to the tune of â€Å"hey Mr tambourine man† by bob Dylan, a father and his child are having a nice bonding evening as she strings beads and he repairs a tech machine. An instant intruder enters their apartment and chaos ensures. The music in a way links to the little girl that was later on in the movie rapped. An establishing shot introduces us to the main character; the shot shows the main character and his child which suggests that he has a normal family life. The first scene is of the attack, which took place in an ordinary situation. There is only diegetic sound until the attach where sound is added to set the speed of the attacks. The attacker whispers to the character †you can’t fight fate† while attacking him. This makes the audience wonder if the character deserved this or he turns out to be the antagonist. This is effective as it sets off the mystery of the film and leaves the audience hanging on. There’s a close up shot of a bat that hits the character on the face and the music automatically changes and becomes more violent, there’s a slit change in paste and the theme becomes more faster†¦there’s a close up shot of the bad guy tying up the characters hands while suggests that he is powerless. There’s a close up shot of a bad guys face smiling and holding a knife close to the main characters face which suggests that the bad guy is in control. A close of shot of the main character is being stabbed is show which suggest that he’s lost the fight and makes the audience see him as a weak person. The music becomes more violent as the knife is being pulled out of from his body and a fade out show the characters point of view to show that he is becoming unconscious while we are shown a close up shot of his wife at terror. There’s a focus pull shot of the main character on the floor crying while we see the shadow of his daughter in the background which shows that she is far away and out of he’s reach. There’s a shot of one of the bad guy looking worried and sympathetic for the family which is unusual for a thriller. A low angle shot of the other bad guy is shown which tells that he is more powerful and it cuts to a black screen. When this black screen appears we only hear the sound of police sirens in the back leaving up in shock and wanting us to find out what is going to happen to the little girl. The dark music then gets much louder as the film title â€Å"Law Abiding Citizen† pops up in the same bold capital font as it did at the start.

How to Use Video to Stand Out as an Author

How to Use Video to Stand Out as an Author I adore trailers, and I was thrilled to have the chance to interview Jerome McLain from BookFrenzyStudios.com about the relevance of book trailers for authors as well as the importance of having a professional one done. My eyes were opened! Hopefully my questions drew out information you, as writers and authors, can use in your marketing. Notebook trailers arent necessarily for novels! Enjoy. 1) Visual is a strong attraction for most people as has been demonstrated on Facebook and other social media. Have you seen video work for books as well? Yes. Larger publishing companies have entire departments devoted to video and book trailer creation because they realize video drives engagement on the web more than any other content. If combined with a video marketing strategy, book trailers are a fantastic book marketing tool. 2) Can a video take a book from obscure to a sales success? No. A books sales success depends on many moving parts such as launch strategy, content and timing in the marketplace. What a video CAN do is get the book noticed among its competitors. According to Invodo.com, 80 percent of consumers are more likely to make a purchase after seeing a prom video. Placing the book trailer on a webpage that contains book purchase links is highly recommended because the trailer can prompt an impulse buy response. 3) How do you cram an entire book into a thirty second, one minute, or ninety-minute segment? What is the art to a great short video trailer? I always begin 4) Are some genres more conducive or appropriate for book trailers? I believe all book genres can benefit from a trailer. It just needs to be appropriate for the tone of the book. For example, trailers dont always need to be fast-paced and dramatic. They can take a subdued approach and be just as powerful. A popular trailer style used currently is to edit together interview clips of the author discussing the book. So, it’s really a matter of creating a trailer in the style that best compliments the book. 5) Do book trailers cost a lot to do well, or are they like most things, you get what you pay for? You definitely get what you pay for. Creating a really good book trailer requires time, creativity and technical expertise. Throwing together a PowerPoint slideshow with some dramatic music does not entice many people to buy. It comes off cheap. You dont need to spend a fortune but you do need to invest enough to look professional. Pricing can range between $500 for a very nice :30 teaser video to $10,000+ which includes live actors, location filming, etc. 6) What makes for a bad trailer? All bad trailers have these elements in common: == no clear or interesting story arc == too many book details (if you tell them everything, why read the book?) == poorly chosen music (audio is 50 percent of the video!) == copyrighted music and or images (this error can prove costly!) == unprofessionally edited (images stay up longer than necessary, bad transitions, etc.) == too long in length (:30 to :60 is a good rule of thumb) 7) Can authors create trailers themselves with little experience? They definitely can create a trailer without experience but it will most likely be perceived as amateurish. Online video editing software or DIY video apps allow you to easily create video. But no software or online app can replace the knowledge, skill and talent required to produce a professional book trailer. Its like an author creating their own book cover: If they are not also experienced in graphic design and typography, it probably wont turn out well. 8) When should an author decide to do a trailer for their upcoming book? When the marketing plan for the book is being developed is a great time to consider how to use a promo video/book trailer to amplify exposure and publicity. The trailer can be used to create buzz and awareness on social media platforms as well as a visual elevator pitch for the book to the media. Also, sending a professional book trailer out to prospective reviewers creates a great first impression of the book. 9) Whats the one brief word of advice you have for authors who are on the fence about investing in a short video for their projects? Youve spent a considerable amount of time writing. Youve invested in professional editing and book cover design. Dont let the first impression of your book be determined Find out more: BookFrenzy Studios provides professional video marketing services for authors including Cinematic Book Trailers, Promotional Videos and Social Media Video Ads. Strategic and Planning Management (Bachelor of Business) Essay

Strategic and Planning Management (Bachelor of Business) - Essay Example For new businesses, theorists have proposed various strategic business models. These models include analytical models and models for promoting an organizational system. It depends on the mission, nature, and goals of organizations that which of the models are effective and can be best applied. The models that are discussed frequently in the literature are SWOT and PESTLE, which are used for the business environment analysis (Kachru, 2009). Similarly, the literature also highlights extrinsic analytical models such as Porter’s Five Forces model, which identifies the competition, challenges, regulations and patterns of the new market. Keeping all such models in consideration, this study is going to develop an organizational business plan (Kachru, 2009). The models projected are to be applied in the business perspective to bring effective results for organization and its core services. The theme of the organization is a hotel providing hospitality, tourism, and food services. This is to construct a bridge a relationship between marketing principles, models, and effective organizational plan and system. According to the business literature, when a new business intends to emerge it starts off with deep, critical and intensive planning. Planning is vibrantly important whether it is strategic planning or corporate business planning they are important for a new business (Verardo, 1997). According to David Bangs, business plans have a significant relationship with the starting up of the business (Bangs, 2002). Plans affect starting decisions and decisions bring actions which eventually give foundation to the new business. The same implies to a new hotel business if it wants to get started it has to start with decisive planning stage (Dubrin, 2008, p. 122). As per the theorists’ perspective the starting planning phase is all

Managerial Controls Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words

Managerial Controls - Essay Example He should be relying more closely on empirical evidence instead on his personal opinion on the issue. 2) Does Rabobank Nederland have good control over the accounts managers its New York branch? Would you suggest any changes be made: (1) in the near future? (2) Over the next 5 years, assuming that the branch continues to grow? In the near future, Rabobank should always ensure to book good deals as it was part of its original components of the undertakings from the moment it started the whole wide operation. However, considering how Barr potentially considered credit risk management and would decide situation based on his personal opinion and not on empirical evidence, there should be potential changes to be made at Rabobank in the near future. Rabobank should further increase its control over the accounts managers situated in New York branch. However, assuming that the New York branch continues to grow in the next 5 years, Rabobank should ensure more enhancements rather than changes to be made and learn further on the skills attributed by the accounts managers for they must have been potentially good at what they are doing. As far as take over is concerned, a need to consider a control system is necessary, whether existing or new. However, in the case of AirTex and the take over of Frank and Ted, a new control system is necessary because the latter seemed to have great expectations not just on the entire company but to be specific this included the management and control system. Furthermore, there were other relevant and necessary factors that need to be included like culture. In the takeover, part of the concern of the new administration on management and control should include culture or the working environment. This part should not be overlooked as the new administration’s expectations should be aligned with the prevailing working

Life, legacy and leadership of luis farrakhan Essay

Life, legacy and leadership of luis farrakhan - Essay Example In February 1955, while attending a musical concert in Chicago, Louis was invited to attend the Nation of Islam Saviour Day Convention. In this convention, he discovered a different calling and following encouragement Malcolm X, he joined the Nation of Islam, an organization established in the 1930s by Elijah Muhammad. Louis rose through the hierarchy and was later bestowed the holy name, Farrakhan by the movement’s leader Muhammad. When Elijah Muhammad the founder died in 1975, the Nation of Islam went into organizational chaos and eventually fragmented. One of Muhammad’s sons brought the movement to the formal tenets and practices of Orthodox Islam. Farrakhan withdrew from this Islamic organization and re-established the old Nation of Islam in which he remained loyal to the precepts and practices of its former patriarch. Louis stepped into Muhammad’s leadership mantle where he remained fiery and outspoken on social, political, racial and religious issues. In my view, he carved himself into an image of a militant spokesman for the conservative black nationals. In 1979 through the Nation of Islam movement, Farrakhan founded the Final Call, a weekly newspaper similar to the original Muhammad Speaks started by Malcolm X in which Farrakhan ran a weekly column (Kippenberger, 31). American politics are viewed as being free from threats of tyranny, dictatorship and a solid commitment to civil rights liberties and rights of individual citizens and minority groups as enshrined in the U.S constitution. On the contrary, Farrakhan through his speeches and views raises racial disharmony. He is an influential participant in the national black American politics and history. He continues to fight oppression in the U.S educational system, government and urban communities, the suffering endured by African-Americans, other ethnicities and racial groups. Many diverse local and global organizations hail Farrakhan as a champion in the struggle for freedom from oppressive treatment, justice and equality especially in uplifting and reforming the black community. With some scientific inclination, Farrakhan claims that blacks were the original human species and often quotes scientific findings of the oldest human being as being black (Kayyali, 173). He is well known for leading the Nation of Islam, an African-American movement that has practiced elements of Islam and Black Nationalism. The most significant accomplishment in civic rights activism was the 1995 Million Man March in Washington D.C. The march took a healing message and was inspired by concerns over the negative image of black men propagated by the media and film industry linking the black community to drugs, illicit sex and gang violence. He harnessed dialogue among gangs in the ghettos in major cities in America to reduce the level of social violence (Singh, 265). He set up an economic channel as a base for blacks to excel in business through education and training. He sought to bring solutions to the challenges of war, poverty, discrimination and the right to an education. In 2000 he convened the Million Family March to unite the human family, presided many weddings and re-commitment of vows. In 2005, upon the 10th anniversary of the

Humanity Case Essay Example for Free

Humanity Case Essay Humanity.   Perhaps this is the only word that can explain the strange comings and goings of the man from Nazareth, called Jesus.   The Lost Tomb of Jesus, aired March 3, on the Discovery Channel, an amazing piece of documentary.   In the city of Jerusalem, in the midst of an apartment complex, was found a place of burial.   Perhaps the burial place of, Mary Magdalene, her son Judah, and two brothers-in-law, Simon and James.   Were these the relatives of Jesus the Christ, in the scheme of things the question seems to be irrelevant. Humanity   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Although there is great emphasis placed on the Christ, the Messiah.   Very few people seem interested at all in Jesus humanity.   People are offended at the thought that Jesus may have deigned to have been with a woman, much less married to a whore.   Yet this is the very story told in Hosea.   Gods unquestioning love of even, maybe most especially, one who would be unfaithful.   It seems to me of all of Jesus disciples, Mary is the one who got it.   Only an outcast could truly understand the message of Christ.   To be offered kindness, when only suffering has come at the hands of man, is an indescribable miracle.   How Mary must have loved this man, Jesus.   The Divine, the Christ.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Jesus humanity is controversial.   And I dont know why.   If Jesus was not fully human, how could God come to know what it is to be human?   To struggle?   To be defeated?   To know unbridled joy?   To be shortsighted as man is and yet still have the ability to hope.   How God must love us for that!   Yes, all have sinned and come short of the Glory of God.   Who among us is not aware of their own shortcomings?   Everyone I know.   To be human is to be all to aware of what we are not.   Was that the purpose of Jesus coming?   To remind each of us of our all too familiar failures?   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚      Many others are outraged that anyone should question the Divinity of Christ, as though questioning such a thing changes the very nature of God?   Hardly.   What question could man possibly ask that could be found to be offensive to God?   Yet, this question of Divinity versus Humanity, people seem to struggle over.   Christ is all or none.   Even those who would say Jesus was both human and God, cannot admit that Jesus could have succumbed in his humanity to be human.   And what a terrible misrepresentation.   All throughout the Bible God is represented as part of humankind.   Why would humanity be denied what most Christians believe to be Gods only Son.   There is of course, great misrepresentation and misunderstanding about the chronology of the canon.    That Jesus divinity was not even declared until 300 years after his death.   By whom?   Why man of course?   I wonder if God would be pleased with all that the church, not the body, has accomplished?   Just recently, I visited a new church and although I liked the people.   I was saddened when the pastor started talking about the building fund.   Is this what Christianity has been reduced to?   Buildings?   What of the starving?   What of the homeless?   What of the person who has not known the kindness of a human touch, due to illness or simple isolation?   What of these?   Does God not plague us to be in touch with his light, his life, his children?   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   The Lost Tomb of Jesus is a wonderful representation of the possibility that Jesus was all he said he was.   A miracle.   A blessing in disguise.   Both human and Divine.   Just like the rest of us.   A bit of God rests in us all at the heart of Gods highest creation, mankind.   Rejoice!   Awake!   God is among us!   Living when we thought he was dead!   Alleluia!   Jesus is Alive!

Platos Antipaideia: Perplexity for the Guided :: Philosophy Philosophical Essays

Plato's Antipaideia: Perplexity for the Guided ABSTRACT: ‘Paideia’ connotes the handing down and preservation of tradition and culture, even civilization, through education. Plato’s education of philosophers in the Academy is inimical to such an essentially conservative notion. His dialectical method is inherently dynamic and open-ended: not only are such conclusions as are reached in the dialogues subject to further criticism, so are the assumptions on which those conclusions are based. In these and other ways explored in this paper, Plato demonstrates that paideia has no harbor within philosophy. Jaeger declares in his massive Paideia that civilization, culture, tradition, literature, and education are all merely aspects of what the Greeks meant by their term `paideia', and that these five "cannot take in the same field as the Greek concept unless we employ them all together." I will argue, pace Jaeger, that Plato's unique contribution was no perfection of sophistic humanism, no "reincarnation of the religious spirit of earlier Greek education, from Homer to the tragedians," but with its philosophical context properly restored an utter rejection of the authority of those institutions at the basis of what Greeks understood paideia to be. Without resorting to skepticism, Plato problematized the ordinary; without straining logic, he declared every premise and every conclusion radically open to further discussion and refutation and all this not only without dogmatism, but against dogma. For Plato, education was more fundamental than tradition or literature or civilization or culture, for education determined how all the others were to be acquired, appreciated, and criticized. Indeed, education and philosophy were, as they are now, intimately linked. The practice of philosophy in Plato's time as in ours, the business of philosophy, was teaching far more than it was system-building. In fact, if Plato was the author of a system of philosophy, by which we are to understand a coherent set of interrelated axioms and their mutual implications, then Plato was a profoundly unsuccessful philosopher. For Plato makes such a variety of different and incompatible statements about so many topics that more than two thousand years of scholarship has thus far failed to produce anything like the consensus about his so-called system that one finds among Aristotelians, for example, or even Marxists. It is for this reason that I shall turn from the content of the dialogues to the method or methods exhibited there. In those, I will argue, we have a better model for the contemporary conduct of philosophy than is usually suspected.

Human sexuality Essay

Incestuous inbreeding is the act of mating or having any sexual relations between two beings of close kinship. In people, this is prohibited by law to marry and engage in any sexual activity with any member of a person’s own family and with his/her relatives up to the second degree of consanguinity. Aside from it being a legal prohibition, it is also a considered a social taboo in most cultures. However, the considerations for incest are different depending on the beliefs and customs of these cultural groups. Some have more liberal qualifications for the situation to be called incest, and others are more conservative in the sense that people could not marry even those who are adopted into the family. Nevertheless, there are also some places wherein they permit this kind of familial setup to preserve their royal lineage. There are various kinds and forms of incest. The most common and considered a kind of abuse is the father-daughter incest and other forms of parental incest. However, there are also other forms such as sibling incest and other matches which usually come unreported. Although most cases of incest are born out of coercion, consensual incest also exists in some societies. The rationale behind the incest taboo must have stemmed from social group processes in ancient civilized and uncivilized societies. As studied by anthropologists, older cultures follow the rule of exogamy which enables families and groups to merge with others to form alliances. If incest was allowed, this rule would be violated. Religious groups and sects also have their various takes on this issue and most of them push that incest must not be tolerated and patronized. In modern societies, this legal prohibition now has scientific basis. It was found that since the two people involved in incestuous inbreeding have the same genetic makeup, their offspring would contract inherited congenital malformations. In the event that this becomes the result, future generations would be at risk of catching the same genetic defects. As a product of incestuous inbreeding, an offspring has a tendency to develop recessive disorders such as mental retardation, deaf-mutism, congenital ichthyosis, retinitis pigmentosa, adiposogenital syndrome, and homocystinuria. Previous studies show that more than half of the children born out of incest acquire some abnormality. The reason behind this is that there in an increase in homozygosity in the offspring’s genes, which means that there would be â€Å"the same allele at the same locus on both members of a chromosome pair† (â€Å"Incest,† n. d. ). In other words, if the parents of the child belong to the same family, there is a greater tendency for the child to get a defective gene from both parents. Because of this, it is assumed that there is a specific biological mechanism which prevents species from engaging in incestuous inbreeding. In detail, this mechanism could be more easily described in a comparison between incestuous inbreeding and mating between beings of different blood. Every human being carries some defective genes which are masked in a recessive expression. When two people belong in the same family, for example, as in the case of siblings, half of their genes are identical as they are from the same parents. This means that when they mate, there is a greater likelihood that the defective gene would be expressed in their offspring. However, for two people of no blood relation to each other, there isn’t any identical gene which means that it would be less likely for a genetic defect to be developed in their offspring. This biological constraint and medical risk is a consequence that incestuous inbreeding would bring. It would not only be harmful for the offspring because of the defects that would be acquired or a greater risk for mortality, nonetheless, it would also contribute to the deterioration of future generations. Finally, aside from these aforementioned medical considerations, it would also be appropriate to regard the psychological side effects as important in these situations. There are lots of cases which show that incest, especially those situations which could be considered as forms of abuse, result in psychological, mental, and emotional trauma. This probably might be because of the fact that it is established as a taboo and the behavior is a contradiction to that belief or attitude. Whatever the case may be, there would always be a negative outcome when two people engage in incestuous relations and inbreeding. References Children born as a result of incest. (1981). Abrahamic Religions

Christianity, Judaism, and Islam are all very closely unified as Abrahamic religions because they share a multitude of common beliefs and thoughts. Hinduism, on the other hand is almost complete opposite of these religions. The extreme differences within these religions has seemed to cause problems between them throughout history. Hinduism is considered to be an Eastern religion while Judaism, Christianity, and Islam are considered Western. (Lafave,2004. Location, leaders, religious practices, and political issues are just a few aspects that bring them to differentiating opinions. The Abrahamic religions have many shared ideas and thoughts in relation to life and the driving force of the universe. Jews ,Christians, & Muslims all agree upon the notion that there is only one creator of all of humanity. They are all monotheistic religions and they rely on holy scriptures as a life guided tool. The Christians use the Holy Bible, Islams refer to the Qu’ran, while Jews refer mostly to the Torah. All believe that the human body is only a temporary state and that if the soul is a deemed a good one by following God’s plan then it goes on to live eternally in heaven with Jesus or the equivalent. If the soul judged by God is unworthy, then it must live in hell with the devil. Jews, Muslims, and Christians alike all believe in a coming of the Messiah, though at different times. Another shared belief is that GOD is a merciful God and must be respected and given praise accordingly. He will forgive the sins of the people by repentance and one must live their life according to his teachings. These beliefs are just the tip of the iceberg when talking about similarities between the Abrahamic religions. Hinduism is an almost complete opposite of the Abrahamic religions. Hindus have no substantial founder of the religion nor do they only worship just one God, but different Gods and Goddesses and manifestations or aspects of the Supreme God. Hinduism is considered a pol ytheistic religion. The life guided scriptures used by them is the Vedas which are considered the oldest and most sacred religious texts. Hinduism beliefs consider karma to determine one’s life path for the future in the cycle of reincarnation. Karma is considered to be the universal law of cause and effect. They consider life to be a continuous cycle and the end goal for them is to be released from life by â€Å"learning the true illusions of life and achieve unity with the Brahman†. â€Å"Individuals may find release from life by devotion to one or more of the Indian Gods. (Hopfe &Woodward,2009. p. 98)Hinduism has grown to become the world’s third largest religion. Places of worship include temples and home shrines. Brahman is the unifying principle and Supreme Reality behind all existance though is rarely worshipped. Brahma is the most widely known and is the recognized one as Creator of the world. The similarities that are shared by these religions are very few and many conflicts have actually risen from differences in views of the world. In modern civilation in these days and times, I believe in unity of all religions. If the whole world could all come to a common point of understanding, there would be less need for war and misunderstanding of humanity. Even though these religions are deemed so different, I believe there is a unifying force that helped create them all.References Hopfe, L. & Woodward, M. , (2009). Religions of the World,11th ed. How to Reference an Edited Book †APA Style

How to Reference an Edited Book – APA Style How to Reference an Edited Book – APA Style Even if you’re familiar with the basics of the American Psychological Society (APA) style guide, referencing different source types can be tricky to master. But since clear and consistent referencing is essential to academic writing, this isn’t something you can ignore. Having a professional check your work is one way to ensure that nothing goes awry with your citations. Herein we offer a little advice on how to reference edited volumes using APA style. APA Style and Edited Volumes The APA system is commonly used for academic texts in the social sciences. A general author–date format is utilized for in-text citations, with full publication details included in an alphabetically ordered reference list at the end of your paper. Referencing edited books, such as collected volumes of essays, differs from referencing other printed books when using APA style citations. Citing a Chapter The information required when citing a single chapter from an edited volume is as follows: Author Name, Initial(s). (Year). Title of chapter. In Editor Name (Ed.), Title of book (page numbers). Place of Publication: Publisher. For instance, this would look something like the following: Author, A. (2007). My essay. In A. N. Editor (Ed.), Editing a collection: Adventures in anthologies (pp. 6-12). New York: PMP Publications. Its important to note that it is the author you cite in the main text of your paper when referencing a single chapter. Citing a Whole Book When citing the volume as a whole, the editor’s name and initials should be included in place of the author’s: Editor’s Surname, Initial(s). (Ed.) (Year). Title: Subtitle. Place of publication: Publisher. The abbreviation â€Å"(Ed.)† is included in parentheses to indicate that this is an edited volume. In the reference list, this would appear as: Editor, A. N. (Ed.) (2007). Editing a collection: Adventures in anthologies. New York: PMP Publications. A text with two or more editors simply requires that you include all of the editors’ names in the reference. Editor, A. N., Compiler, B. A. (Eds.) (1986). Collected works. New York: PMP Publications. If youre citing an entire edited volume like this, make sure to give the editors name in your in-text citations. Edited Volumes with a Single Author When referencing an edited collection of writing by one author, such as a poetry anthology, the author’s name should be used for the primary reference and the editor’s name should be included after the title: Wordsmith, A. (1974). Wordsmith: A collection. A. N. Editor (Ed.). New York: PMP Publications. The in-text citations accompanying this reference would then use the author’s name: To quote one poet (Wordsmith, 2013), â€Å"Poetry is more than just rhyming† (p. 12).

Personal and professional development Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 6750 words

Personal and professional development - Essay Example Life is a journey of a self-discovery. I can’t believe how far I’ve come considering my childhood on the tiny Japanese island of Okinawa. After spending much of young adult life in the United States, however, my recent return to Okinawa brought me to terms with the importance of my heritage. Okinawa consistently ranked as a number-one popular destination for the Japanese domestic tourist. In 2009, the prefecture recorded nearly 6 million visitors, close to that of Hawaii’s number. Surprisingly, during my tenure at the Okinawa Convention and Visitors Bureau (OCVB), public destination marketing organization, however, only 3 percent of tourists were international visitors. It is not understatement to say that Okinawa’s beauty is virtually unknown to the outside world. I began to understand that Okinawa needed more people with sophisticated business acumen to effectively aid in municipal development on many occasions especially during promotional activities such as tradeshows and conferences. Fierce competition led by foreign investment resulted in the buyout of major hotel properties in Okinawa. I was fortunate to be able to sit in on meetings with highly energetic and extremely bright executives. They consistently demonstrated excellent entrepreneurship and I recognized that my college education had not prepared me to conduct business on the senior level. Small island economies such as Okinawa, tourism industry becomes the most important business, accounting for 20-70% of the current external receipts. In an effort to strengthen the industry and with new policies known as â€Å" Visit Okinawa Program† in fiscal year of 2010, the prefecture set a goal of attracting 10 million tourists and generating

Social Responsibility Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words

Social Responsibility - Research Paper Example Organizations that follow CSR policies recognize their responsibility towards the society in which they operate. Although they operate with profit motives, their sole objective behind running the business is not maximizing profit. A company cannot run without the support of the community and it can only grow when it takes such steps that would improvise the status of the society as a whole. Every organization feels an obligation towards fulfilling the demands and well being of its customers, welfare of its employees, profit of shareholders and the interests of the whole community (Hassan & Harahap, 2010). Besides, the company also has a responsibility towards the environment. They have to make ecological considerations in all their operations. It is a big responsibility for socially responsible organizations to reduce their ecological footprints and make more environmentally friendly activities. Managers that develop their business policies by synchronizing their objectives with prin ciples related to these aspects, finds success in making socially responsible moves. Social responsibility of corporate organizations Concern towards CSR is rising fast among the companies operating in the gulf countries. A number of ways have been devised to make the socially concerned organizations operate in socially responsible way. Research shows that organizations in UAE base their CSR activities on the four pillars strategic governance, human capital, shareholder capital and environment (Hancock, 2005). The companies dedicate a portion of their profit for the funding of art and culture in different countries, for providing academic scholarship to less advantaged students belonging to the grass root level in the society and for supporting any type of community-building initiative (Du, 2013). The theory of CSR links closely with the concept of Sustainable Development (Shahwan & Hassan, 2013). According to this concept, enterprises are supposed to make their decisions on the bas is of short term financial factors as well as long term factors that have deep environmental consequences. It is strongly believed that while short term profits or dividends allow the company to occupy good market position in the short run, in the long run, companies can become successful by making holistic moves towards the development of the entire society in which it is operating (Hassan, 2009). For achieving this end, organizations have to look after the environmental cost of their activities. Four important arenas that companies should look after while making socially responsible action, besides presentation of environment are human rights, labor rights and anti corruption. CSR practices in UAE Organizations based in UAE are actively thinking about their CSR initiatives. These are aimed at a number of purposes. Some of the most important objectives of practicing CSR activities by the companies are building community relationships, enhancing living standards of the population of the country and also helping the people of the country defend themselves against natural calamities. Various companies in the Emirates take socially responsible actions in the form of â€Å"social marketing projects† (Flynn, 2012). Corporate managers in the country demonstrate high level of responsibility towards the society.

Being America's First Black President is Not an Impeachable Offense Essay

Being America's First Black President is Not an Impeachable Offense - Essay Example The extent to which this opposition is due to his politics and his race is discussed in the context of recent events. It is concluded that a president cannot enjoy success without reasonable cooperation with those from other political parties. Being America’s First Black President is Not an Impeachable Offense The concept of impeachment has a rich history in American rhetoric. The term emerged from France in the 1640s, and it refers to a judicial proceeding against a public official (OED, 2010). In the United States, only two presidents have ever been impeached: President Andrew Johnson in 1868 (for violating the Tenure of Office Act) and President Bill Clinton in 1998 (for alleged perjury). Both of these attempts at impeachment succeeded; however, they certainly sent a strong message to the accused and the country, and it is an important asset to a constitutional republic. A so-called â€Å"impeachable† offense by a Federal official could be any unethical or illegal ac tion. Regardless of its usefulness in ensuring the rule of law, it is a useful tool in political rhetoric because it signals a substantive opposition to someone in power. Now, opponents of President Barack Obama propose to impeach him because of a wide range of problems they see with his policymaking. Recently, one Republican lawyer drafted impeachment proceedings against the President because of his commitment to help Libyan rebels win their civil war (Smith, 2011). The â€Å"Impeach Obama Campaign,† which is a petition that claims over one million signatures, takes issue with nearly every development emerging from Obama White House (Shapiro, 2011). In a political environment like this, it is little wonder why the President’s opponents claim he has been an ineffective leader. As an expert on negotiation will say, it is impossible to produce good results when every proposal, every thought, and every action is stonewalled. The virtue of winning the political game is pra cticed more than the virtue of creating good policy in the contemporary political environment. However, unquestioning opposition to President Barack Obama is not a new phenomenon; it is something Americans have seen since the young Illinois Senator emerged as a serious candidate in the 2008 election cycle. According to writers at Politico, President Obama has demonstrated that he is not the kind of president with a naive hope to change Washington (Harris & VandeHei, 2010). This is demonstrated by the steps he took in 2010 to overhaul health care in the United States and a financial reform. For an advisor to the President, it is frustrating that despite these accomplishments, America is still not satisfied with the level of success they would like to see from the Federal government (Geraghty, 2010). He notes that any one of the President’s most significant accomplishments would have been celebrated much more heavily if there were any other president in the White House (Geraght y, 2010). Thus, the question becomes about the factors that are holding President Barack Obama back from being celebrated as a successful (or at least â€Å"effective†) president. Indeed, there seems to be a multitude of different factors, not the least of which is the critical opposition he faced from the other side of the political aisle. In what

Contract law examination - Essay Example However, if the offeree asks for further details about the offer, the offer is not rejected and is still effective as seen in Stevenson v McLean. If the offeror makes the offer again, then the offeree can accept it. An offer also ceases to be effective when the offeree makes a counter offer to the original offeror. In Hyde v Wrench, it was held that a counter offer rejects the original offer. The offeror is not bound to accept a counter offer. However, if he accepts the counter offer, a fresh agreement is formed without any regard to the original offer. iii. Failure to fulfill a condition precedent to acceptance also terminates an offer. If the offeror has specified a definite mode of communication of acceptance which is not followed by the offeree, the offer ceases to be effective. In Manchester Diocesan Council of Education v. Commercial and General Investments Ltd, the courts ruled that an offer ceases to effective if the specified mode of communication of acceptance is not followed. An offeror has a right to revoke his offer at any time before its acceptance. For an offer and acceptance to be valid, effective communication is of paramount importance. An acceptance is not effective if it is not communicated to the offeror. In the given case, Ali sent a letter of acceptance of Yasmin’s offer to her but addressed it wrongly. Until the letter reaches Yasmin, Ali’s acceptance would not be effective as the acceptance would not have been communicated to Yasmin. Therefore, as long as the letter is in transit, Yasmin has a right to revoke her offer. The communication of revocation of offer is also very important. In this case, Yasmin notified Ali’s friend that she had revoked her offer. Assuming that Ali’s friend is a reliable third party, by the application of Dickinson v Dodds, Yasmin’s notice of revocation would be deemed to be sufficient and effective. After her revocation, she would not be bound to perform her promise when the let ter

Freshmen Should Be Required to Live in the Dorms Essay

Freshmen Should Be Required to Live in the Dorms - Essay Example As well as Studies show, students who live on campus perform better academically than students living at home, said Michael Coakley, associate dean of student affairs and executive director of housing. Coakley added â€Å"National and institutional studies have continually shown that students who live in school housing for their first year of study have significantly higher retention rates, graduates according to the school calendar, and have greater involvement in campus life,† Campus housing not only provides academic and social benefit to the freshmen but also has advantages of free and available food, just like home even though it does not taste good like home food, but at least they know they have available ready-made food when needed. Also, there is a warm place to live, sleep, study and save, oppose to the student who stay outside campus, they will have to balance between studies and household chores like buying and cooking food, and paying bills i.e. electricity, water . One cannot serve two masters at a time (studies vs. household chores); therefore, freshmen students should live in campus in order to save resources like money and use it for something else like business, clothing, partying, or donations. Living outside campus especially as a freshman, students miss campus life experiences like dorms offer support and learning experiences, in such a way students who wants to study late in the libraries can do so, without worrying about taxi, train fares, or security like mugged, raped, or worse murdered on the way home. I believe living at school makes one socially prepared for life since they will be able to learn to be independent away from their parents, meet many people with a common interest as theirs, above all a friend a person make in college will often be friends for life. Living in campus will also allow them to join extra curriculum activities like clubs and sports, which allow students to step out from their comfort zone and experience new interest giving room for social connection and bonding. Though, many students complain about overcrowding in dorms, annoying roommates, noises and denial of freedom, freshmen are young adults, and they need to know that in every institution globally there are different individuals with different personalities, beliefs and cultures. Therefore, in order to survive, they need to deal with different people and situation. Nevertheless, rules are everywhere to be followed. Young people need rules, which remind them of their misleading acts, being shown where to live is not some kind of juvenile treatment and lack of freedom to choose, but on the brighter side, it works like a charm by reducing financial hardship to students who came from other states or under scholarships/ bursaries. Students should live in their dormitories during the first year because it allows them to network with other students easily. It has been proven through various social science studies that students with strong networking skills prove to be more successful in their careers as opposed to independent or isolated individuals. Networking also provides students with skills on problem solving and decision making in issues they face in life. Therefore, to obtain knowledge for lifelong success individuals need to live with career-oriented colleagues. The disadvantages of campus housing are some students may be
