I stepped outside and the heat hit me like a smack in the face. It was way too hot for October, 90 degrees. It looked like shed ripped it once, and tried stitching it back up herself. Her hair was a wreck on the top of her head, and she had on more eye makeup than was necessary. Her son looked about six years old, and had on a Pokemon t-shirt. Her daughter was even younger, and was wearing an old, yellow dress that was too big for her. She walked by me, towards the checkout counter, with her kids hands firmly in her own. I could smell the sweat on her. My sandwich was ready, and when I took it to the register I heard the lady ask for a carton of cigarettes. I stood behind her. The boy looked back at me, and I smiled at him. He gave a tiny grin, but then quickly looked at the ground, and gripped his moms hand a little tighter. The lady was talking to the cashier, about the heat, and the little girl asked her mother in a hushed voice if she could get an ice cream bar out of the freezer. Her mother ignored her. So the little girl asked again, and this time, her mothe r reached down and smacked the little girls mouth, hard, and said in an angry voice, Cant you see that Im talking! She then turned back towards the cashier, and acted like nothing had happened. The cashier looked surprised, but she didnt say anything. The little girl cried and held her mouth with her free hand. She made high pitched wheezing noises every time she took a breath. Again, her mother stopped talking to the cashier, grabbed the girls arm and shook her hard. Shut Up! she yelled. I was taken aback. I couldnt believe that the mother had reacted so violently towards this little girl. The mother saw me watching, and glared darkly at me. She then paid the cashier, who had a shocked expression on her face, and left the store, half dragging her children behind her. I was in disbelief as I watched her leave the store. I placed my sandwich on the counter, and the cashier rang it up. We didnt say anything to each other. There was nothing to say. She handed me my change, I left the s tore, and got in my dads pickup. As we pulled out of the parking lot, I saw the lady and her children walking along the road. Hence, vehicles were incorrectly allocated leading to long delays. The LASCAD system soon came into a standstill because of the large and spiraling calls made by patients in order to receive help. Several calls were captured by the system within a very short time. The delay caused a massive death of patients. Eventually, the chief executive officer of LASCAD w as compelled to resign. A new LASCAD system was put in place after four years. From the case study, it is evident that the initial management of the VCF, LASCAD and the baggage-handling project were not realistic at all. In addition, the software project failed due to lack of prior testing of LASCAD’s emergency backup system. Worse still, the LASCAD’s operators lacked adequate training before the system went live (Chua 2009, p.33). In yet another project failure, a large IT software platform known as MANDATA was set up by the Australian Public Service Board in 1970 (Chua 2009, p.33). The IT project was supposed to automate personnel administration. However, the software project failed and did not meet the set objectives. The brainchild of the project retired shortly after the feasibility of the study was accomplished (Hamill Goseva-Popstojanova 2009, p.488). One of the reasons for failure was the funding restriction. Lack of adequate funding to install all the pertine nt software and maintenance of the facility was a core challenge. There was also limited support from the MANDATA users. In addition, lack of full engagement among the Rural Inclusion Support Program (RISP) workers was also noted as a major source of failure (Hamill Goseva-Popstojanova 2009, p.487). Lack of frequent interaction among the stakeholders of CONFIRM. The complexity of the project in the course of its operation hampered the smooth monitoring of all the pertinent activities. The tale is a about a girl named Tattercoats, who lived in a castle on an island in the middle of the sea. Her mother died in childbirth, therefore did Tattercoats grandfather swear that he would never look at her. So she grew up quite mistreated, and was called Tattercoats for her tattered clothing. One day an invitation from the king arrived, announcing a great ball at which the prince will chose a bride. Her grandfather sailed off to the palace, but Tattercoats was left behind. So she went to see her only friends, the geese, and there she meet a boy, who became her friend. The boy could fly a kite, so he used it to fly Tattercoats across the sea. They meet a handsome young man on their journey. He asked for direction, but they were already heading to the castle so he followed them. Suddenly he looked at Tattercoats. The young man had a revelation, and felt in love with the poor, tattered and dirty girl who never had experienced such a thing as love. The man was so impressed by her beauty, that he invited her to the ball. When she arrived to the, she discovered that the young man was the prince, and he chose her to be his bride. They lived happily ever after, meanwhile Tattercoats grandfather went back to his castle more bitterly than ever. Tattercoats† is based on a traditional English tale, that shares some features with the Cinderella story. First of all there is a poor and abandoned girl whose parents are dead, and therefore her only relative is a mean stepmother or, as in this case a vicious grandfather who don’t see her as a family member. The life of the girl is awful, but she has to live accordingly until one day she hears that the prince is looking for a bride. Sure there is no chance she is able to make it to the upcoming ball. Then something magical happens, a miracle. In â€Å"Cinderella† it is a fairy who conjures a pumpkin coach up whereas in â€Å"Tattercoats† it is a boy with a wonderful pipe and some geese, that makes it is possible for Tattercoats to attend the ball. Feeling a sense of connectedness Wether this be on a physical,social,spiritual or emotional level to something or someone allows for an individual to feel a sense of gratitude and self belief. To a certain extent the groups we belong to define who we are, and an individuals perceptions are the resulting outcome of belonging. The acceptance and kinship being in association with groups may bring one would say belonging would impact ones life positively. Although he opposing side of belonging is not belonging and is as a problem many people in the world face today. This alienation may leave individuals feeling detached and isolated from all things surrounding them. There are many reasons why one may not belong these may include race,religion,culture,attitudes and beliefs as well as many others. This separation felt may severely impact an individuals life in a negative direction. The poems by Australian poet Peter Skrzynecki illustrate many examples of kinship and detachment. Many of the poems in the book Immigrant Chronicle by Skrzyecki explain his problems with feeling like an outsider stuck in limbo between his Polish culture passed down by his parents and his new Australian culture that he was exposed to everyday. In the poem â€Å"Felix Skrzynecki† Skrzynecki states â€Å"I forgot my first Polish word† this line illustrates Skrzyneckis lack of interest in his Polish Culture as he feels he doesnt belong. In the poem â€Å"Felix Skrzynecki† Skrzynecki uses alliteration in the second stanza to suggest peace and tranquillity, as his father holds his garden in high regard and Skrzynecki feels this is the only place where is father truly belongs. This allows for responders to learn that one may feel attached to something other than other people or groups. In this poem Skrzynecki also illustrates his fathers exclusion from the rest of Australia by the line â€Å"did your father ever attempt to learn English† this line shows Felix isolation as he cannot speak the language of the country he lives in. Although in stanza one the lines â€Å"Kept pace only with the Joneses Of his own minds making† suggest that Felix was not bothered by values or lifestyle choices that he did not believe in. This poem and other Skrzynecki poems further knowledge involving belonging and not belonging as they provide primary sources that identify multiple examples of the issue. The story is based on the novel Playing the Enemy: Nelson Mandella and the game that Made a Nation. The film tells the story of Nelson Mandella in his first term as South African President, and the initiation of the venture to abolish the apartheid and unite the nation through the 1995 Rugby World Cup. The film illustrates many examples of not belonging due racism and prejudice behaviours shown by white south Africa. The film allows for racism to be viewed as one of the demanding reasons for isolation. Although later in the film an attitude shift is imminent and relationships are bridged between â€Å"black and white South Africans due to the efforts of Mandella. The film illustrates how film techniques such as camera shots,angles and music are used to create a sense of detachment at the start of the film but also show the uniting of South Africa in the end of the film. Invictus enhances knowledge of the issue belonging as it shows many examples not belonging at the start of the film, but with a shift in attitudes reveals many signs of belonging shown towards the end of the film. Due to the complex and abstract nature of the concept of belonging, a true sense of belonging can be found in different circumstances for different people. A sense of belonging or not belonging is thought about by every person in the world today, its what many people strive for everyday although some may never find it,whilst others have always had it. Analysis of a range of texts including the Peter Skrzynecki poems and the film Invictus delve deeply into the many different circumstances that individuals may wish to belong in.
